Monday felt like a unicorn day. A baby who hadn’t completed a proper nap all day fell asleep on me later in the afternoon. I had lots to do but didn’t want to risk waking him up by moving him to his crib. So I enjoyed the snuggles and wrote some words on my phone.

Thank goodness for technology that allows me to do that. Lots of the time I curse my phone for the peace it steals from my life (no human was meant for this much access to information at any hour of the day but here I am using it anyways)… Where was I… Oh right – writing on my phone.

It used to be before I had responsibilities like a job or children I could write whenever the words arose. Now though it can be hard to find those opportunities to write. And often when I have the opportunity my brain will sit there and spin.

So I’ve been thinking a lot about how it’s okay to spend time day dreaming and trust that when I can sneak a few minutes the day dreaming will pay off and my writing brain will be ready to roll.

It seems that today (well Monday) that was the truth. I found myself with time and opportunity and when I opened the manuscript and found my place and tweaked a timeline issue I’d created suddenly the words flowed and the story made sense again.

I’ve been listening to The Quitcast by Becca Syme on YouTube (okay I listen on Spotify, but she’s a native YouTuber) and she talks a lot about writing the way your brain is wired to write.

It means that in the season I am in while I have to let go of the lack of freedom to go and lose myself in a manuscript whenever I want I get to embrace my natural inclination to procrastinate on the actual writing and simply day dream.

There are still moments of frustration when I day dream up a whole bushel of great material but don’t have the chance to get it on paper – but then there are moments of bliss when I get to pour it out while a baby sleeps with his head rested on my chest.

And then there are days like Tuesday when I have some time but the words just don’t arise. That’s okay though – because they will tomorrow or the next day after that.

No story to share this week. Maybe next week!
