Over 3 years ago I did something very impulsive… I decided to get a puppy! Before you judge me because I used the word “impulsive” in the same sentence as “puppy”, I was responsible in finding a good breeder, I even researched the breed! When the time was right I went to visit little Truman to make sure he was the dog for me (at that point in time his name was still Duffman, like off of The Simpsons;). When I went to visit him I took him a little skunk toy with a squeaker in both ends. It was bigger than him! He liked it right away and tried to carry it around.

Look how tiny he was!!!

Three weeks later I brought Truman home, and boy did I find out the difference between researching a dog breed and living with a pure bred dog. The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog is not for the faint of heart! I love him though and the reason I tell you this story is because he is a large part of the good in most of my days. I never have to look very hard when I look at him.

Today I went to the pet store to look for some super yummy dog treats. What I found was even better! I found the same toy that I bought for Truman more than three years ago. The original toy has long since been torn apart and became so dirty that I had to throw it out. When I found the same toy today I wondered, does Truman have as many fond memories of the toy as I do? I wanted to find out so I brought it home.

He’s put on a few pounds since then…

To be honest I think he was more interested in the smell of the pet store and the dog I met there than the actual toy. Nonetheless I am sure with a few value-building exercises this toy will become a great reinforcer for our training games! Plus, I really enjoyed the trip down memory lane.

Trivia for today’s post, what movie or show was the inspiration for Truman’s name? 😉 If you want to read the previous Looking for the Good posts use this link. Also! Yesterday’s trivia was answered by the very helpful Sonia, and my boyfriend Ky. Duplex with Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore was the movie I was thinking of but couldn’t remember completely. It was Barrymore who choked on the Lysol-soaked raisin, funny how we can fill in the gaps in our memory like that. Also, Sonia, thank you for the “look up” idea. I didn’t get a chance to try it today, but I will have to sometime in the near future!

  1. I love reading your thoughts when I wake up….. it’s a good start to my day 🙂 I was really hoping he would remember the toy 🙂 You must be a real movie buff – you should have met Riley.
